Decentering Him Hard

He texts a heart at 11.47 and suddenly the week has to fold around it. Sleep gets moved. The mate’s birthday drink becomes “maybe later.” Work stays open one more tab because the maybe might turn into a plan. That is the gas leak. Not the man himself. The way the whole house rearranges the second he walks in. You still want the warm house. You just want the thing that poisons the room dealt with first.

Decentering him hard is not a spell you cast on TikTok. It is not deleting the vision board and lighting a candle. It is a boundary that smells like self defence. Friends keep their slot. Sleep keeps its slot. The job that pays the rent keeps its slot. He does not get to kick the door in and rearrange the furniture because he sent a heart emoji. He is a guest until he is a partner. Plenty never get the promotion. That is allowed.

The Smell Hits First

You clock it early if you have lived it before. The soft launch energy. Cropped wrist on the story. Two glasses. Blurry shoulder. Never the face. Never the name. A relationship you can deny at speed if it goes wrong. That is not chic mystery. That is a woman who has been publicly half-chosen before and would rather die than do the press tour again.

I have done the soft launch. Posted the table and not the man. Kept him off the family WhatsApp like he was contraband. Not because I was evolved. Because I did not trust the product and I still wanted the feeling. Embarrassment is a social fever. It flares when the boyfriend is a performance. Look what I pulled. Look how wanted I am. The comments become the relationship. When he disappoints you, you still have the photo. Tragic little pension.

Hard launch energy is different. It is him doing the boring things when nobody is clapping. Bin night. The GP appointment you have been putting off. Your mate’s birthday where he actually turns up and talks to people. Saying you are his in rooms that do not benefit him. If he was proud and consistent you would not need a strategy for the grid. You would just have a person.

Friends Do Not Become the B Team

Your friends keep their slot. That is the first test. Not the ones who disappear the second a man appears. The ones who notice when the week starts bending. The ones who still get the 9pm call even if he is in the flat. They do not become the B team because he texted. They do not get the cleaned-up version of the story where everything is fine and you are doing well.

Basildon does not leave you. Thin walls. You heard every argument next door. The neighbour’s dog going mental at 3 a.m. Mum worked nights at the supermarket for a stretch. Sunday roast was the one meal that felt like winning. Chicken if we were flush, whatever was on offer if we were not. I still go back every other weekend. Sit at that same table. Eat too much gravy. Listen to her tell me I look tired. She means it kindly.

In London the newsrooms still smell like private school. Glass walls. People who say “shall we” instead of “shall we or what.” I walk in wearing the cheap black coat from Primark that looked smart enough. Notebook still has Tesco receipts stuffed in the back. Some days the chip on the shoulder makes me sharper. Other days it just sits heavy. Decentering him means the estate does not get edited out so he can feel comfortable. Your politics do not become too much. Your flat does not become his default without his name on a bill.

Sleep Is Not Optional

Sleep keeps its slot. Not the performance of sleeping next to him while your brain runs the calendar. Actual sleep. The kind where you do not check the phone at 1 a.m. because the maybe might have turned into something. He does not get to kick the door in at 2 a.m. because he is horny and the night is young. Your body is not on call.

I used to think wanting filthy one-sided sex made me a bad feminist. Hours of focus on me while I did nothing back. Pleasure-dom energy. One in eight thousand men who treat your orgasm like the main event. Not boyfriend material. Just for the taking. The guilt sat there for years. Internalised misogyny, I told myself. Then I stopped fighting it. The orgasms got sharper. I could just be greedy without performing gratitude. Feminism survived. The warm house can include that. It just does not include rearranging the sleep schedule so he can feel like the sun.

Low sex drive is not a character flaw. Responsive desire is real. Most of us are not spontaneously horny the way the apps pretend. We need the build-up. The attention. The warm-up that is not a chore he performs so he can get to the bit he wants. If he expects the life to fold around his nonchalance, the life does not fold. You notice whether he fits or expects the fold. If it gets smaller, that is not romance. That is capture with better lighting.

Work Stays Open

The job keeps its slot. Not the unpaid intern role of calendar, therapist, audience, alibi, proof of worth, proof she is not difficult, proof the heteropessimism was just a phase. Too many jobs for one noun. Those roles can revert to sender. You can want a man and refuse to be his infrastructure. You can fancy him and still not hand over the keys on week three. You can miss him and not reschedule your life around his maybe.

I have sat in pitch meetings with blue nails tapping the table. Someone said the story about women on early shifts at the distribution centres sounded a bit grim. Grim. Like hardship is a tone you can opt out of. I smiled. Said I would think about a different angle. Went to the toilet. Stared at myself in the mirror. Glasses slightly steamed. Hair in that messy bun I never quite get right. I looked like someone who had snuck in. Decentering him means you do not also have to perform the cleaned-up version at home so he does not have to hear about the chip on the shoulder. He can live with the noise or he can jog on.

Boy sober. Solomaxxing. Self-partnering. Ugly marketing words for a clean practice. She stopped building the week around a maybe. The manosphere heard decentering and screamed. See. They do not want us. They want the 20 percent. They want the bag. No. They want not to be a project. They want a person who can stand being keen in daylight. If that empties the inbox, the inbox was the problem.

He Is a Guest Until He Is Not

He does not get to kick the door in and rearrange the furniture because he texted a heart. Friends keep their slot. Sleep keeps its slot. Work keeps its slot. He is a guest until he is a partner. Plenty never get the promotion. That is allowed. You can still want the warm house. You can still want the sex that makes you feel worshipped for an hour while you do nothing back. You can still cook. Snog. Build something that could survive a Tuesday. Just do not orbit. Orbiting is how you lose years and call it loyalty.

Mum still does a roast. I still get the train home. I still think some bloke out there is late, kind, and worth a hard launch. I will not pretend the last few years of dating were a cute mix up. They were a briefing. Algorithms. Obedience polls. Split bills with unsplit labour. Cool boys. Courtship apps. Body count tribunals. Bots that flirt better. Politics as a doorframe. Decentering him is how you digest the briefing without swearing off desire. You put the smoke alarm in the middle of the room. If he is safe, he can live with the noise. If he is not, he calls you cold and jogs on. Good.

You can choose him. He does not get to be the sun. Soft launch the wrist if you must. Better to launch a life that still stands if he never shows his face. The gas leak gets dealt with first. The warm house stays. Friends, sleep, work. He fits or he does not. That is the whole thing.
