The body is not the whole bargain
Let us start with the obvious, because you already know it and you still need someone else to say it out loud. He is having an excellent time. Consistent sex with a woman who shows up, does not demand a performance review after every round, and apparently keeps her mouth shut about the fact that he will not put her on his story. That is a very convenient arrangement for him. He gets the version of you that is warm and willing and still a little bit of a secret. Secrets are hot. Secrets also mean he never has to explain you to anyone who might ask awkward questions like “so what are you two then?”
The line about hating the performance is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Plenty of men hate the performance until the performance suits them. They will post a blurry photo of a wrist or a table with two glasses when they want the world to know they are not available, then act like the whole idea of visibility is beneath them when it would require actual effort. Meeting your mates is not content. It is just a Thursday night in a noisy pub where someone might take the piss and someone else might clock that he keeps looking at you like he already knows how you sound when you come. If that feels like too much work, the problem is not modern dating. The problem is that he has decided the work is optional.
You are not imagining the gap. The gap is the point. Soft launching a relationship is one thing. Soft launching the entire existence of the other person is something else. You are not asking him to tag you in a carousel of couple selfies. You are asking whether you are allowed to exist outside the hours he has booked you in. Those are different requests. One is vanity. The other is basic. When he collapses them into the same thing and calls both “performance,” he gets to keep the sex and dodge the rest without ever having to say the quiet part out loud.
What you do with the information
So what now. You can keep taking the body and pretending the rest will appear once he feels safe enough. Some women do that for months. Sometimes it even works, if the man in question is simply slow and a bit of a coward rather than actively keeping you in a box. You will know which one he is by how he reacts when you stop making it easy. Next time he is round, or you are at his, and the sex has been particularly good and he is still half on top of you catching his breath, you say something simple. Not a speech. Not an ultimatum dressed up as a vibe. Just the plain version. “I like this. I also want to meet your mates properly and I want you to stop treating my name like it is classified. If that is too much, tell me now so I can stop wasting the good underwear.”
Watch what he does with his face. Not the words. The face. If he goes tight around the mouth and starts talking about how he is “not into labels” or “just not that guy,” you already have your answer. He is into the sex. He is not into the version of you that has friends and a life and the ability to tell other people he exists. That is allowed. It is also not your problem to solve by being more understanding. You can be extremely understanding and still end up three months down the line still checking his story like a detective while he gets exactly what he wants on a schedule that suits him.
If he surprises you and says fair enough, then you make him prove it. Not with a grand gesture. With the boring stuff. A Friday where you both turn up to the same pub and he does not spend the entire night acting like you are a work colleague he quite fancies. A text that is not purely about what time he can come over. The absence of those things is data. You already have the data. You are just hoping it means something kinder than it does.
And if the sex is as good as you say it is, do not let that become the reason you stay quiet. Good sex is not a personality. It is not a relationship. It is a very nice activity that two people can do while one of them is still deciding whether the other one is allowed to be real. You can enjoy the activity and still refuse to be the secret. Plenty of women manage both. They just stop pretending the two things are the same.
You asked if it is just modern or if it is you. It is modern in the sense that a lot of men have learned they can get away with the minimum and still call it casual. It is you in the sense that you already know the minimum is not enough and you are writing to me instead of telling him. That is the bit you can change tonight if you want. The rest is up to him. And if he chooses the version where you stay off the story and out of the group chat, at least you will know you asked for the whole thing instead of settling for the parts he was happy to give you for free.
