Boyfriend Is Embarrassing

Not because love is lame. Love can still feel like the best kind of ordinary. The problem sits somewhere else. Boyfriend got called embarrassing because performing a soft launch for an audience beats being chosen with actual care when nobody is clapping. That is the bit that sticks. The cropped wrist. The two glasses. The blurry shoulder. Never the face. Never the name. A relationship you can deny at speed if it goes wrong. That is not chic mystery. That is a woman who has been publicly half-chosen before and would rather die than do the press tour again.

I have done the soft launch. Most of us have. You post the table with two drinks and his hand just in frame. You wait to see who asks. You keep him off the family WhatsApp like he is contraband. Not because you are evolved. Because you do not trust the product and you still want the feeling. The comments become the relationship. When he disappoints you, you still have the photo. Tragic little pension.

Soft Launch Is What You Do When the Care Is Thin

If he was proud and consistent you would not need a strategy for the grid. You would have a person. The soft launch exists because the relationship is content-shaped and commitment-shy. You test the audience. You test him. You keep an exit that looks like taste. It feels clever in the moment. Protective even. Then you notice you are managing the story more than you are living the thing. The wrist crop takes longer than the actual date. You start checking the angle before you check if you even like him that much.

Embarrassment is a social fever. It flares when the boyfriend is a performance. Look what I pulled. Look how wanted I am. Look how okay I am. The group chat weighs in. Your mates do the detective work on the half-seen arm. Someone says he looks tall. Someone else says the watch is nice. None of it is him. It is the idea of him. And ideas do not do bin night. Ideas do not show up when your mum is in hospital or your work is on fire. Ideas look good in the story and then vanish when the likes stop coming.

I used to think the soft launch was just modern. Dating apps trained us to keep options open. Algorithms reward the almost. Then I watched a mate do it properly. She posted the full face. His name in the caption. No crop. No mystery. The comments were quieter. Fewer detective questions. More normal ones. How did you meet. Are you happy. She looked relieved. The performance had cost her more than she admitted. Once the performance stopped she could actually see the man.

Half-Chosen Is the Real Insult

Being half-chosen is worse than being single. Single has edges. You know where you stand. Half-chosen means he likes the version of you that fits in the story. He likes the version that makes him look good in his own half-story. He does not like the version that needs things. The version that has a bad week. The version that wants to know if this is going anywhere. That version gets the slow fade or the sudden busy. Then you are left holding the photo like evidence that it happened. It did happen. Just not in any way that required him to choose you in daylight.

Women did not go off men as a species. They went off the part where boyfriend means unpaid intern. Calendar. Therapist. Audience. Alibi. Proof of worth. Proof she is not difficult. Proof the heteropessimism was just a phase. That is a lot of jobs for one noun. Soft launch makes it worse because now you are also doing the marketing. You are the one deciding how much of him gets seen. You are the one managing the narrative so he does not have to. He gets the benefit of looking taken without the cost of actually being taken. You get the benefit of looking wanted without the cost of being fully known. Both of you lose. Only one of you notices first.

I decenter men the way I decenter a gas leak. I still want a warm house. I just want the thing that poisons the room dealt with first. Soft launch is the gas leak with better lighting. It looks aesthetic. It feels modern. Then you wake up and the whole flat smells of almost. Your friends keep their slot. Your work keeps its slot. Your sleep keeps its slot. He does not get to kick the door in and rearrange the furniture because he texted a heart. He is a guest until he is a partner. Plenty never get the promotion. That is allowed.

Hard Launch Energy Is Not a Face Reveal

Hard launch energy is him doing the boring things when nobody is clapping. Bin night. GP. Your mate’s birthday. Saying you are his in rooms that do not benefit him. It is him remembering what you said about your sister three weeks ago. It is him not needing you to edit the story. The face reveal is the least of it. Anyone can take a photo. The hard part is staying in the room when the photo is not the point.

I have kept him off the family WhatsApp. I have cropped the wrist. I have told myself it was boundaries. Sometimes it was. Sometimes it was fear dressed up as strategy. Fear of the press tour. Fear of the questions. Fear of having to explain why it ended when I had already sold the version where it was good. The soft launch lets you keep the exit. The hard launch means you have to admit you wanted it. That is scarier than looking single. Looking single is just a fact. Wanting someone and then watching them fail the boring tests is a different kind of bruise.

Boyfriend is not embarrassing when it is care. It is embarrassing when it is a prop. Soft launch the wrist if you must. Better to launch a life that still stands if he never shows his face. You can want a man and refuse to be his infrastructure. You can fancy him and still not hand over the keys on week three. You can miss him and not reschedule your life around his nonchalance. The manosphere heard this and screamed. See. They do not want us. They want the twenty percent. They want the bag. No. They want not to be a project. They want a person who can stand being keen in daylight. If that empties your inbox, the inbox was the problem.

What Keeping Yourself in the Middle Actually Looks Like

You do not disappear when he arrives. Your friends do not become the B team. Your politics do not become too much. Your flat does not become his default without his name on a bill. You notice whether he fits the life or expects the life to fold. You notice whether he can be proud of you in rooms of other men. You notice whether your world gets smaller or louder. If it gets smaller, that is not romance. That is capture with better lighting.

Mum still does a roast. I still get the train home. I still think some bloke out there is late, kind, and worth a hard launch. I will not pretend the last few years of dating were a cute mix up. They were a briefing. Algorithms. Obedience polls. Split bills with unsplit labour. Cool boys. Courtship apps. Body count tribunals. Bots that flirt better. Politics as a doorframe. Decentering him is how you digest the briefing without swearing off desire. You put the smoke alarm in the middle of the room. If he is safe, he can live with the noise. If he is not, he calls you cold and jogs on. Good.

Love is not the enemy. The unpaid role is. The performance is. The half-choice is. You can choose him. He does not get to be the sun. Want him. Text him. Cook. Snog. Build something that could survive a Tuesday. Just do not orbit. Orbiting is how you lose years and call it loyalty. Boyfriend stops being embarrassing the minute it stops being content. The minute the care is thicker than the story. The minute you do not need the crop because the full picture already looks like someone who chose you back.

Watch this space. I am not done.
