Sunday afternoon and I nearly forgot the whole thing. Sat there with a cold coffee and the washing machine going mental, thinking about Lisa and how she got cocky after I basically handed her the best night of her life. She has a Substack now. Uses it to dig at me in that careful way where she never says the name but everyone who knows us knows exactly who she means. Debt unpaid. Proper unpaid.
I planted the seeds in Flipper for weeks. That is what I called her in my head once the plan started. Not Lisa. Flipper. Because she used to flop about, half-interested, never quite committing to the bit. I wanted her to ask for the number. Not because I am some mastermind. Because she had spent months taking my work apart in the group chat, picking holes in the threads, saying the Guardian pieces were fine but a bit much, a bit Basildon. The usual. So I decided the poke back had to be better than the one she gave me. Accurate. Funny enough that even she could not fully argue with it. And useful.
How the seeds went in
It started with a hint while we waited for the bus after a night out. Nothing heavy. Just me saying my guy was coming over later and that he had this thing where he could go for hours if you asked properly. She laughed. Said she had not had anything like that in years. I left it. Then the odd post on here where I mentioned that getting with a friend’s recommendation or ex was perfectly fine because I knew she was reading every word. Nothing obvious. Just enough to put a crack in the moral wall she kept talking about. A few weeks of that. She started asking questions. Casual ones. What is he like. Does he text back. Is he actually nice or just good at the one thing.
I gave her the number on a Thursday. Told her to say I sent her. My guy broke her over six hours. She slept two days after. Then she got cocky. Texts me saying she had never come that hard. That he knew exactly what he was doing. That she felt like she had been sleeping with boys before and this was a man. All my idea. My plan. She knew it. I did not hide it. I wanted her to know the chef’s kiss of the takedown was that I had fixed the thing she kept complaining about and now she owed me.
She did not stay grateful. That is the bit that still sits wrong. Within a fortnight she was on two dates in a week. Dumped by one. The new one is actually quite nice, which is unheard of for her. He brought out a wild side she did not know she had. Spectacular, if I am honest. What I wanted. And then the Substack started. Soft at first. Posts about friends who give advice they do not follow. About women who engineer things then act surprised when it works. About how some people write about sex like they invented it. No name. Just enough detail that the people who were there that night clocked it. The six hours. The sleep. The cocky texts. She even used the word Flipper once in a comment under someone else’s piece and I nearly spat my tea.
The debt that never got paid
Friendship between women is supposed to be the safe bit. The place where you can say the quiet parts. I told her I was writing about men and desire and the gap between what we say we want and what we actually chase. She said it was brave. Then she used the same words back at me once she had the good sex. As if the bravery was the problem. As if I had done something to her by making the introduction. She slept two days. She got cocky. She started a Substack to dig. That is not a thank you. That is a scoreboard.
I still reply to her messages. Not because I am soft. Because the story is better when she thinks I have not noticed. She asked last week if I had seen her latest post. I said no. I had. It was about women who treat other women’s sex lives like content. Which is rich. She is writing about the night I arranged. She is using the confidence that came from six hours of someone who knew what he was doing. And she is doing it in the same place I write, with the same readers who already know the outline. Debt unpaid. Not money. Not even a proper apology. Just the ordinary debt of not pretending you did it all yourself when someone else handed you the key.
Basildon taught me early that people remember who sorted the problem. Council estate, thin walls, everyone knew who fixed the boiler and who just talked about it. You do not get to take the warm house and then write a thread about how the person who dealt with the gas leak was a bit intense. She knows that. She grew up two streets over. Different postcode, same thin walls. Same habit of clocking who is actually useful and who is just loud. She chose the useful bit then acted like the loud bit was the betrayal.
What she got and what she did with it
The new guy is nice. She says so. He texts back. He does the boring things. Bin night energy, apparently. She has been on dates that do not end in her crying in the Uber. All of that started after the six hours. Not because my guy was magic. Because she finally saw what it looked like when someone focused on her for long enough that she stopped performing. She slept two days. She woke up different. Then she got cocky and decided the difference was hers alone. The Substack is the cocky bit in public. Soft launch of the new confidence. Never the full story. Never the part where I said take the number, say I sent you, and do not come back here talking about boys again.
I do not want the night back. I wanted her to stop being half-alive about sex and then use it against me. She has not stopped. The posts keep coming. A bit more pointed each time. Readers who do not know us think she is just being honest about female friendship. Readers who do know us send me the links with a laughing emoji and the words “she is still going.” I laugh back. Then I sit with the cold coffee and think about the bus stop and the weeks of seeds and the text she sent at 4 a.m. saying she could not walk properly. Debt unpaid. She can keep the Substack. She can keep the nice guy. She can keep the wild side. She just cannot pretend the key was already in her pocket.
Women talk about this stuff in the group chat and then act shocked when it turns up in print. I wrote about it because the poke had to be better than the one she gave me. Accurate. Funny enough that she could not fully argue. She is arguing anyway. In public. With better lighting. That is allowed. It is also not a thank you. The six hours happened. The two days of sleep happened. The cocky texts happened. The Substack is just the bit she is willing to show. The rest stays between us and the people who were on the bus that night. Some debts do not need collecting. They just need naming so the story stays true.
Watch this space. I am not done with the quiet parts. Neither is she.
