Unpaid Intern Boyfriend

He texts a heart and the whole week rearranges itself. Suddenly your Tuesday pilates is negotiable. The group chat goes quiet while you draft the reply that keeps him warm without promising too much. You become the calendar. You become the therapist. You become the audience for his day. You become the alibi when his mates ask where he was. You become the proof that he is fine, that the heteropessimism was just a phase, that he is not difficult. That is a lot of jobs for one noun.

Boyfriend used to mean something closer to partner. Now it mostly means unpaid intern with benefits. The benefits are inconsistent. The internship never ends.

The jobs that got handed over

Start with the calendar. You remember his mum’s birthday because he does not. You nudge him three days out so he does not look like the sort of son who forgets. You check if the restaurant takes walk-ins because he said he would sort it and then did not. You move your own plans because his train is delayed and he is already in a mood. None of this is dramatic. It is just the background labour that keeps the thing looking functional.

Then the therapist bit. He had a bad meeting. You hear the whole thing on the walk home. You ask the right questions. You do not say the thing that would actually help because that would make you difficult. You absorb the frustration so it does not spill onto his mates or his boss. Later he feels lighter. You feel like you have been on shift.

Audience is quieter. He sends the screenshot of the argument with his brother. You are meant to take his side without the full context. He posts the photo from the weekend and tags you last. You like it because that is the job. When the comments are thin you are the one who fills the gap with a heart and a private message that says the right thing.

Alibi is practical. His friend asks if he is still seeing that girl. He says yes and you confirm it when the friend asks you separately. You do not mention the three weeks of silence or the soft launch that never hardened. You keep the story tidy.

Proof of worth is the quietest one. If he has a girlfriend then he is not the problem. The problem is the apps, or the women, or the economy. You exist as evidence that he can do the thing. When it ends he will say he tried. You will have the messages that show you tried harder.

All of these roles used to be split or simply not required. Now they sit on one person because the alternative is him doing them himself and that has never been the deal.

Why the noun got so heavy

Dating apps made the supply look endless and the demand look optional. A man can keep three conversations going and still feel scarce. The woman who wants the title has to earn it by performing the supporting roles in advance. Soft launch energy rewards the performance. Hard launch energy requires him to do the boring bits in rooms that do not clap for him. Most never get the promotion.

Social media turned the relationship into content that needs managing. Someone has to decide which photos are safe. Someone has to notice when the comments turn. Someone has to keep the private reality from leaking into the public version. That someone is rarely him.

Therapy language made emotional labour look like love. If you are not holding space then you are cold. If you name the pattern then you are difficult. The unpaid internship gets rebranded as care. Care is meant to go both ways. This version mostly travels in one direction.

Class shows up here too. Working class women already do the emotional work at home and at work. Adding a boyfriend who needs the same service does not feel like an upgrade. It feels like another shift. Middle class women sometimes have more language for it and more options to outsource. The pattern stays.

What reverting the roles actually looks like

You stop remembering his mum’s birthday unless he asks. You stop drafting the reply that protects his feelings before you have checked your own. You keep your pilates. You tell the group chat the truth instead of the tidy version. You do not become the audience for screenshots that need a verdict.

When he has a bad meeting you say that sounds rough and then you talk about your own day. You do not absorb it. You do not fix it. You let him sit with it the way he would sit with it if you were not there.

You post the photo or you do not. You do not wait for him to decide if the relationship is real enough for the grid. If he wants the hard launch he can do the boring things first. Bin night. The GP appointment he keeps cancelling. Your mate’s birthday where he shows up on time and talks to people he does not already know.

You stop being the alibi. When his friend asks you say we are seeing how it goes. That is accurate. It does not require you to perform stability you do not feel.

The proof of worth job ends when you stop treating the relationship as evidence of his character. He can be fine or not fine without you as the exhibit. You can be fine or not fine without him as the certificate.

None of this requires a speech. It requires you to stop doing the work and see what remains. Some men notice and step up. Most do not. The ones who do not were never going to. The internship was the product.

The pushback arrives on schedule

People will call it selfish. They will say relationships need compromise. They will ask what you bring to the table if you are not bringing the calendar and the therapy and the audience. The answer is the same thing he brings: presence, desire, practical help when it is offered freely, and the refusal to treat another adult like a project.

Cats get mentioned. You will die alone. As if the alternative was guaranteed company rather than company that still leaves the emotional admin on your side of the table. Plenty of women in long relationships still do the unpaid internship. The title does not cancel the labour.

Some men will say they never asked for any of it. That is often true. The ask is cultural. The woman who does not do it looks cold. The man who does not do it looks normal. Reverting the roles makes the double standard visible. Visibility is uncomfortable. That does not make it wrong.

What stays when the jobs leave

You can still want him. You can still text first sometimes. You can still cook. You can still snog. You can still build something that survives a Tuesday. The difference is that the something does not require you to run his life in the background while he decides whether the something is real.

He remains a guest until he is a partner. Guests do not rearrange the furniture. Guests do not get the keys on week three. Guests do not expect the host to manage their calendar and their feelings and their public story. Plenty never get the promotion. That is allowed.

The noun gets lighter. Boyfriend stops meaning unpaid intern. It starts meaning the person who does his own share of the boring things and does not need you to prove he is worth the effort. If that version is rare then the rarity is information. You can want the rare thing without performing the common labour in the hope that it appears.

Watch what happens when the roles revert to sender. Some men step forward. Some men disappear. Both outcomes are cleaner than the slow leak of doing someone else’s job while calling it love.

You still want the warm house. You just want the thing that poisons the room dealt with first. The unpaid internship was never the house. It was the leak. Fix the leak or live with the smell. Most women have been living with the smell for years and calling it compromise.

The jobs can go back. The noun can shrink to something a person can actually carry. The rest is optional. It always was.
